Introduction
In the beginning the earth was formless and desolate… You know the creation story taught in the religious realm, and now look at the world we are living in today almost reaching its brims, and still more new structures are being developed day by day. How will it look in 500 yrs to come? Try to reflect how it was 500yrs ago. Without science how could it have been? Totally incomprehensible.
Scientific Inventions have pivoted life forms on this planet– rising from dire quests and simply by accidents.
Each and every generation that the world has recorded as far as human civilization could date, have strived to steer ways of understanding the universe better than before. From the Era Homo Erectus to the era of Aristotle, Confiscus, Plato. Coming all the way to the era of Columbus rising to the era of Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein. All these spurring to the present era of information; the era of Steve Jobs, the era of Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Me and You…. you can name them.
All these people together with many others not mentioned in this article dedicated their intellectual and physical effort in an attempt to simplify life. These insightful processes has called for deep introspection, trial and errors, hypothesis and experiments. Which have bred various techniques that simplify ways of doing tasks.
The present generation utilises the discoveries of the past generation to better the present world as well as refuting other facts of the past generation. Who knows how the future generations will react to the facts and findings of the present generation, and if the past generations could resurrect, how will they interact with the facts of the present generation?
It's all but a mystery immersed in the quantum world. However much complexity is bound in this world, Human beings have always found better ways of devouring challenges and delving into solutions of world never ending problems. Welcome to my blog once again and let's discover some of the greatest scientific inventions of all time.
1. Invention of the wheel. ☸
This’s one of the ancient inventions in human history. Dating back to about 5,500 years ago in Mesopotamia as regarded by many historians. However, other studies have shown that it existed earlier than that in China and some parts of Europe. Though, being one of the eye opening inventions, its invention cannot be credited to a single scholar.😔
The earliest form of wheel was inform of wood with a rotating axle.
Its invention led to development of transport as goods were carried easily by carts pulled by animals, it later had agricultural use in traction and irrigation.
Who could believe that that wooden wheel of the Summerian will influence the development of the present day wheel of Porsche or range rover?🚙 Over the years the wheels have been modified into various functions that have simplified various tasks in this world. Try to imagine a world without wheels. 🤔
2. Invention of printing process 🖨
Knowledge becomes useful only when shared, otherwise it remains an obscured thoughts of the mind.
To jump-start that vehicle, German goldsmith; Johannes Gutenberg invented a movable type printing press around 1440 that stimulated the Printing revolution.
The printing press facilitated dissemination of information which gave rise to mass scholarly around the world. With the demand of information increasing, literacy level rose exponentially, extinguishing the monopoly of knowledge that had belong to the rich elite.
This invention is far much considered one of the eye opening inventions that lighten the blind eyes of the world. As of today we can access boundless information in the form of books, posters, billboards.... The present day world is moving to virtual printing where information is circulated online, but all these resonate to the ancestry of the printing press developed by Johannes Gutenberg.
3. Invention of electricity.
Benjamin Franklin is regarded as the key individual who conducted extensive research on electricity in the 18th Century. However, this discovery cannot be credited to a single individual since it involved various scholars who injected facts and findings into its study.
Scholars like Otto von Guericke, Robert Boyle, Stephen Gray , C. F. du Fay, Luigi Galvani, Hans Christian Ørsted, André-Marie Ampère, Michael Faraday, Georg Ohm , James Clerk Maxwell. and et al contributed mass ideas into what can be used today in lighting, heating, charging, running various machines etc.
Invention of electricity changed the scope of the world and became the driving force behind other inventions that changed life forms on this planet.
Remember electricity electrified the The Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb invention and Alexander Graham Bell Telephone.
4. Invention of Antibiotics 💊
Antibiotics changed the world of medicine in the early 20th Century. Their invention brought a sudden relief to humankind that had been threatened by various 💉bacterial infections.
In 1928 Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming, while working on a culture of disease-causing bacteria, he discovered the spores of a green mould, in one of his culture plates. He observed that the presence of the mould prevented the growth of the bacteria. Fleming postulated that the mould must secrete an antibacterial substance, which he named penicillin. The invention was never expected since it rose from an experiment targeting different objectives. You can call it mercies of Serendipity.
Antibiotics have been used over the years to fight various bacterial infections.
5. Invention of Airplanes ✈
When we say life develops from simple to complex, then the aviation industry can testify.
Who could believe that the gliders developed by Wright Brothers could one day give life to large commercial airliners like Boeing, Jets and aeroplanes that we see today? It’s a process that consumed human research, trials and errors until it knocked perfection.
The Wright Brothers invented and Flew the first planes in 1903. Basing their concept on the work of George Cayley dating back to 1799 who set the concept of the modern aeroplane.
Aeroplanes have overcome various challenges that humans had before their existence. Through them man can access areas that were not accessible before. They have also facilitated the fastest means of transport around the globe that enables man to traverse vast continental boundaries.
6. Invention of incandescent Light Bulb 💡
Thomas Edison's incandescent light bulb is one of the iconic inventions the world has ever witnessed.
In 1879 the American scientist witnessed his experiments coming to success in his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. The experiment, according to him, cost an elaborate study and research. He tested various imaginable materials to find the one suitable for the bulb filament. But it later paid off as he patented his first electric bulb. From various scientists, we can see how the objects that we enjoy today are projects of trial and Error.
7. Invention of Telephone . 📞☎📱
In 1876 Alexander Graham Bell received the first patent rights of Telephone when he developed an apparatus for transmitting vocal and other sounds telegraphically.
The device that you’re holding right now was an innovation from Bell’s phone that at first could only transmit messages over a short distance. Further research and improvements developed it to a mobile object that can fit inside your pocket and perform tasks like E-money transfer, access pool of information in the Internet, send messages worldwide through WhatsApp and many more. Telephone invention is a breather that changed the world into a global village and we must appreciate this technology that has taken control of our lives today.
8. The Concept of DNA Profiling.
DNA profiling was developed in 1984 by British geneticist Sir Alec Jeffrey's. Methods have been developed to purify DNA from organisms, such as phenol-chloroform extraction, and to manipulate it in the laboratory, such as restriction digests and the polymerase chain reaction.
DNA profiling has helped in forensic science to solve various crimes. DNA profiling is also used successfully to positively identify victims of mass casualty incidents, bodies or body parts in serious accidents, and individual victims in mass war graves, via matching to family members. DNA profiling has been used to filter out athletes using banned substances from participating in sporting activities. DNA is also used in determining paternity of children which is always a threat to deadbeat parents.
9. Invention of Body Imaging Appliances.
In 1895, German physics professor Wilhelm Röntgen stumbled on X-rays while experimenting with Lenard tubes and Crookes tubes. The technology later became a freshener to medical world by providing a better way of studying visceral organs of human body easily. This gave birth to the CT scans and Radiology Scans that have proved to be useful in the medical world.
10. Invention of Internet
When we talk about the Internet, most people commonly think of Bill Gates and his Microsoft, Larry Page and Sergey Brin and Google and Mark Zuckerberg with Facebook(Meta). However the above present day innovators managed it mainly because of the foundation laid by various scientists who research the Web world.
In 1989, English computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee weaved the World wide web(www) , the virtual location where information is stored in the Internet. With the Internet rooting itself in the 1960s when scientists tried to interconnect computers wirelessly.
The Internet has far much been an essential tool to human life with its accessibility through mobile phones, ipads, tablets and computers. The Internet is a home of various information that humans need for survival. It is because of the Internet why you're reading this post now. It is because of the Internet that I can laugh and share memes with friends. It is because of the Internet why you can purchase something on Amazon and Ali baba…. Importance man reaps from the Internet unfolds to infinity and this invention is just more than a jewel on a crown of our today's life.
11. Invention of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.
This is among the recent inventions that haven't reached their prime levels but have been promising. The history of Robotics dates back to 1943 when Isaac Azimov set the first three laws of Robotics. Artificial intelligence on the other hand was coined by John McCarthy in 1956 aiming to solve mathematical problems and geometrical theorems.
The two have advanced over time and they are being used to assist man in performing various tasks. The rise In technology has been a boost to these inventions as per present day world where self driven automobiles exist. Other algorithms such as AI writing tools are also available. Some companies employ Robotics labour to work on certain tasks since they have been realised more accurately.
However, this technology is not fully developed therefore they cannot be depended upon since most of them are still prone to errors. But with further research and studies, Robotics will form a major part of the working force in various sectors.
