Just like Athena, Osiris, Alexandria and Apollo of the ancient Greece, is science the god of this generation? Perhaps, scientific Revolution was the second coming of Jesus. 🙃
Jesus left his disciples with a promise of his second coming. The scriptures clearly tell us that no one knows about the day nor the hour(Matthews 24:36). Still talking about the second coming, Hebrew 9:28 says “So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him."
Salvation of mankind from suffering is all binding us to these hopes. However, as the scripture says in 1st Thessalonians 5: 2 that Christ will come in the night like a thief, we ain't sure if he's already existing among us in an unrecognizable form.
With the vast development that the world has witnessed since the onset of the Scientific Revolution, we may not need salvation anymore. Believe it or leave it.
In this post I'm going to expound on this delicate topic by talking about the ‘duties of gods' that science has been performing since then.
It is not a blasphemy but true facts staring at us in the broad daylight.
1. Science saved the world from epidemics
In the old days, outbreaks of diseases were viewed as punishments from gods. They made prophets and healers to indulge in offering huge sacrifices to save mankind. Many persons lost their lives through mass executions, taking blames because of their sins. Talk about the Spanish flu of 1918, Black Death of 1347-1351, Russian Flu of 1890-1891 and many others that almost wiped the sapiens out of this planet. All these were viewed as punishments from gods.
The year is 1928, the person is Alexander Fleming, a man who changed the world with the discovery of antibiotics. From this point many outbreaks have been domiciled, they don't threaten man anymore. When AIDS emerged scientists rushed to the laboratories to find the cure and vaccines, same happened with Ebola and the latest one COVID 19. It's now normal to man that epidemics are not punishment from god's, it is now clearly in man's conscience that when there is an outbreak, solutions are provided by science through medical researchers not by gods in the sky. From this we clearly see that science is now saving the world from perishing, maybe science is the second coming of Jesus that Christians were promised.
2. Science Deciphering Earthquakes Droughts, and Floods
Natural forces that have kept man on toes for generations. In the past they were viewed as punishments from divinities, but the tune changed when man began to decipher some codes of the universe. From the earliest form of earthquake recorded in human history in 1177 BC that almost sunk China, to the latest one that occurred in Turkey 2023, it is very clearly that man now knows that earthquake occurs as a result of tectonic imbalances that releases energy inform of waves into the earth’s crust. Not some punishment from gods. Through studies, areas that are likely to experience quakes have been categorized in order to reduce casualties that may rise if they occur.
Drought was also viewed with the same optics, sapiens believed that when there is a drought then there are some supernatural powers angry at us. But today the tune is totally different, we are all aware that drought occurs as a result of change in patterns of moist winds in the atmosphere. UAE in 1990 launched a project on Cloud Seeding technology to help them solve the problems of insufficient moistures, these are processes that were only under control of god in the past, but as more research advances, droughts will be threats no more. Looking at over 500,000 bodies drowning in the Yellow River Flood of 1939, The world knew that these people were paying for some ancestral sins, a view that many of the ancient generations possessed.
Today science has made us understand these occurrences, science has come up with remedies, science has come up with solutions. We don’t need rainmakers anymore when there is Strenuous draughts, we don’t need to sacrifice our bulls to appease gods In times of earthquake. What we need is the intellectual mindset of scientists to walk us through them. Indeed science could be the Messiah of our era, let’s embrace it instead of waiting for a holy Messiah.
3. Science The creator.
Sapien conquered the world, sapiens developed the World, and now sapiens are creating their own babies. Impotence was a threat in the old generations. Marriages were ripped apart, many women were shunned from communities due their inability to undergo natural birth, many men lost their dignity due to their inability to make their wives pregnant. It was a shame, you can tell. Looking at this today, a different narrative is living among us.
On 25th July 1978 Louise Brown became the first Baby to be born through this process and others followed. We can now take our reproductive cells to laboratories and let them develop there, if there are any risks to be avoided in the natural pregnancy. We don’t have to ask gods to bless our wombs, we have to visit our Gynecologist. Men suffering from sterility can also seek help from sperm donors, surrogate mother’s also exist to help our ladies, All these made possible by science. Indeed, our savior is amongst us.
4. Science Beautifying Us through Plastic surgery and Transexual
As far as the bible says that we are wonderfully made, to some extent we don't agree with it. Physical appearances have always been a concern of sapiens. Looking at the old writings, we can clearly see how Cleopatra was described as a beautiful and charming woman, David of the Bible was also described as a handsome young man. These clearly say that there were others who were ugly in their generations and were oppressed with it.
But today, science is telling us to relax. If you don't like the shape of your nose, you don't have to ask gods for a beautiful nose. If you don't like the size of your butt, you don't have to ask gods for curvy butts. What you have to do is find an experienced plastic surgeon and let him recreate your boobs into the shape you desire, let her design your lips into the shape of your choice. We don't have to bear that ugly face with a pretense of being wonderfully made, we have the opportunity to recreate ourselves into that Cinderella we want to be, we have to design ourselves into that Romeo we want to be. Thanks to science through his daughter plastic surgery.
Gender is a trait that is always assigned to us in the womb. Nobody applied to be born a man or a woman. We found ourselves already possessing our gender. If you don’t like your gender, it was impossible to change in the past but as I am writing this article now, many people have undergone Transexual process and have that gender that they desired without asking God to create them, only through science.
Gender of the Baby can also be altered by estimating time of sexual intercourse. Which wasn’t there in the ancient generations, where people gave birth to numerous children seeking a certain gender.
Do you still believe that there's another savior coming to save us?
Come on wake up from your slumber.
4. Science creating more Lands for us.
I read in my high school Business Studies textbooks that supply of land is fixed. Is this so?
Well, we all now know that we can drain swampy areas to increase land for settlement and agriculture. We can irrigate the desert to practice farming.
In 1920 The Dutch launched the Zuider Zee project, grabbing land from the sea to practice farming, a project that is working to date. They didn't ask God to create more lands for them.
Greenhouse farming and Hydroponics farming are others following that suit.
Space exploration to other planets is also an attempt to seek land for human settlements and production. All this happening without consulting some gods for guidance but reading and interpreting science better.
We can make less habitable land into more habitable lands because of science.
5. Science The creator of Genetically Modified Organisms.
We came to the world and multiplied to fill it, we crave for more and we have the capability to create more. When our crops cannot withstand our harsh climatic conditions, we have to alter their genetic makeup. When we desire that hairy dog, we don't have to bow down or fast in the desert for forty days and forty nights, we just alter their genetic makeup. In 1974 Rudolf Jaenisch modified the first genetically modified mouse; many other organisms have come to existence since then.
With further research ongoing, the realization of gene therapy will create a world where parents will have a full control to create Michael Jordan, Eliud Kipchoge, Christiano Ronaldo, Ben Carson, Michael Jackson, Agatha Christie, Elon Musk, Barack Obama and Bill Gates in one person.
We won't be asked to pray to have that genius kid, we won't have to pay tithes to have those desired traits in our children, it will be a simple task done in scientific laboratories.
6. Science The Giver and the taker of lives.
Life is always viewed as a divine gift. Only God has the power to give and to take it. Killing someone is outlawed in every country, committing suicide is viewed as a Taboo across cultures. It is only the will of divine powers to extinguish life from a sapiens. But it reaches a time when we don’t want to live anymore, it reaches a time when we can’t hold onto pain anymore, it reaches a time when living doesn’t make sense to us. If we think of taking a rope, It’s a lot of pain to endure, if we think of drinking poison, it involves pain that leaves us dying with tears. But since science wants us to live a simple life, here comes euthanasia a simplest way of dying peacefully without pain. Today Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain and all six states of Australia have legalized Euthanasia. Through these science proves that it can take life since it can give it.
7. Science The true prophet.
In the stock exchange markets, stockbrokers will guide you to invest in the shares of company X not Y because company X will bring more returns in the future than company Y. It’s not gambling, nor some prophetic mission inspired from above. It is about using statistics to study market trends, analyze economic conditions then make a decision that will turn profitable some years to come. In the Silicon Valley, The wall Street, Dubai, Bern, Seoul and Beijing, many have built fortunes by worshiping statistics not by worshiping some supreme beings.
Weather forecasts have foretold impending droughts and heavy rainfall which occurs. Financial specialists have predicted tough economic times which have been fulfilled without invoking some spiritual beings. It all goes back to scientific understanding, foretelling the future that was left for prophets receiving their messages from above is now done by science recieving messages from deep research and analysis.
8. Science The Giver of Eternal life.
Buddhists believes in Nirvana, Muslims believe that their souls will enjoy eternal life in Barzakh, Christians believe that they will dine with their creator in Paradise or Heaven. All religions of the world since the days of ancient Greeks and Egyptians have waged their lifestyle to some holy place after their death. The Egyptians mummified their citizens to preserve their bodies for eternal life. Pharaohs were buried with some of their possessions for continuity of life after death. It has been in everyman’s plan that their souls will be taken to a holy place when they die.
What makes it more controversial is that, we can only visit this places after death, we cannot visit these places alive. Does that one sound like a scam?
It is even surprising that we do compare beautiful places to heaven yet for one to go there death must occur!!
After antibiotics managed to tame bacterial infections, drugs have been manufactured to lengthen the life of sapiens, X-rays scans, CT scans, Organ Transplant, Blood Transfusion. These have tried to achieve eternity but they haven’t managed. Though as at now, Some world profilic theories such as natural selections ought to be reviewed.
We are in the times where development of stem cells are being researched, development of nanobots capable of navigating through our blood streams to repair worn out cells, anti-aging studies are ongoing, manufacturing of body tissues are in progress.
Then robotics and cyborgs are coming to existence.
With all these processes, science is promising us that eternal life can be possible. The most interesting thing is that science is planning to bring eternal life in this world while religion is planning to bring eternal life after death. It gives us more reasons that currently, science is becoming a god with all the powers needed.
Summary
The content of this article may sound blasphemous, in fact in the past generations, something of this kind could have earned me a death sentence. But since man is understanding the world more better, it comes clear that these are things that exist among us. Many Churches rebuked ideas such as organ transplants but today their members undergoes the process. It is a reality that one day will unfold itself fully in the eyes of the World. It may take hundreds of years but it will happen. It will reach a time when death will be a threat no more.
